Undercarriage Sprockets: The Pulsating Heart of Traction

At the core of every job site, amidst the sound of engines and the dust being kicked up, there is an element working tirelessly beneath the machine, often forgotten but fundamental to every single movement. It’s not the boom, it’s not the cab. It’s the undercarriage, and within it, the sprocket is the true star.

This is not a simple gear. It’s the point of contact between the engine’s force and the ground, the crucial link that transforms power into traction, allowing your machine to tackle climbs, rough terrain, and heavy loads. Without a reliable sprocket, the machine stops.

The Key Role and Technical Characteristics

The sprocket, generally located at the rear of the undercarriage, is a critical element of the track system. Unlike idler wheels, which guide the track at the front, the sprocket is the only part that engages with the track to move it forward. To withstand the enormous torsional stresses and constant wear, it requires the highest quality materials and special treatments.

High-quality sprockets are produced using either casting or forging processes, depending on the specific application, and are heat-treated to ensure superior surface hardness across the entire tooth profile. This induction hardening treatment significantly increases wear resistance, extending the component’s useful life and preventing premature failure.

A Range Adaptable to Every Need

Our partner, Berco, is a specialized and leading manufacturer in the industry, with an offering that meets the needs of machines ranging from 1 to 330 tons. The company’s experience has led to the development of specific solutions for different applications:

  • Sprockets for Bulldozers: Often featuring a bolt-on segment design, they allow for quicker and easier maintenance, as there is no need to remove the entire track for replacement.
  • Sprockets for Mining Excavators: Designed with an odd number of teeth, they offer greater resistance to vertical loads and a special profile that facilitates mud discharge, preventing buildup and ensuring optimal performance even in extreme conditions.

Whether the machine is intended for heavy-duty work on a construction site or in a quarry, or if it operates on difficult terrain, the right sprocket is essential to prevent costly downtime and ensure that work proceeds smoothly.

Sprockets are available in both the Berco and Sampierana lines.

Choosing Quality: The Partnership with Berco

The choice of a quality replacement part is not only a matter of durability but also of safety and operational efficiency. This is where the importance of relying on a partner like Sampierana UC Spare Parts becomes clear. Thanks to our long and consolidated partnership with Berco, we are able to provide you with components that meet all the quality standards described above. We offer the necessary support and expertise to help you choose the perfect sprocket for your machines.

Track links assembly: the Resistant Heart of Your Tracked Vehicle’s Undercarriage

In the world of earthmoving machinery, efficiency and reliability are fundamental pillars. Every undercarriage component plays a crucial role, and among them, track links assembly represent the beating heart, ensuring movement, traction, and stability. Relying on robust and high-performing undercarriage spare parts is essential for those operating in the undercarriage spare parts sector.

Why are Track Links Assembly Indispensable?

They are designed to withstand high loads and operate in often hostile environments, such as construction sites, quarries, or agricultural terrains. Their complex structure, composed of links, pins, bushings, and rollers, works in perfect synchrony to:

  • Ensure traction: They allow the vehicle to move on different surfaces, even the most challenging ones, distributing weight and ensuring optimal grip.
  • Support the machine’s weight: They support the entire structure of the vehicle, absorbing stresses during work.
  • Ensure stability: They help maintain the balance of the excavator or bulldozer, which is fundamental for precise and safe operations.

Key Components and Their Importance

Track Group are a complex system, but understanding how their main components work together will help you recognize the value of a quality spare part. Each element has a specific and fundamental role in the efficiency and durability of your vehicle’s undercarriage.

  • Links (Pads): These are the elements that come into direct contact with the ground and provide traction. Their geometry and material are designed to maximize grip and wear resistance.
  • Pins and Bushings: These elements form the “backbone” of the chain, connecting the links to each other. They must resist constant shear and friction forces. Their coupling precision is fundamental for the durability of the entire track chain.
  • Rollers: They support the machine’s weight and guide the chain, allowing smooth sliding along the undercarriage frame.

The Importance of Quality and Maintenance

A superior quality track group translates into:

  • Longer operational life: Fewer machine downtimes and more useful life of the undercarriage.
  • Lower management costs: Reduction of expenses for frequent replacements and extraordinary maintenance interventions.
  • Maximum efficiency and productivity: The vehicle operates at its best capacity, without slowdowns due to undercarriage problems.

Understanding the interaction between these components is fundamental to appreciating why the choice of quality undercarriage spare parts, such as our excavator chains, is an investment that pays off in terms of performance and operational durability.

Rubber track shoes and pads: products from the Sampierana U/C Spare Parts line

Sampierana’s rubber products are suitable for tracked machines up to 20 tons and are divided into three types:

  • Bolt-on rubber pads, with bolt-on fastening to the track shoe;
  • Clip-on rubber pads, with lateral fastening to the track shoe;
  • Rubber track shoes like the Road-Liner/Geogrip models;
Rubber Pads Sampierana

The main features are:

  • Components that are easy to assemble and disassemble, even on the job site, especially the Clip-on type
  • Long-lasting and high-performance rubber compound;
  • Benefit from both the strength of the steel chain and the properties of the rubber;
  • Individual vulcanization and metal core

What advantages do rubber pads and track shoes offer?

  • Traction and machine stability;
  • Prevention of damage to “delicate” surfaces such as concrete or similar floors, asphalt roads, and yards
  • Protection for the steel tracks applied to the machine;
  • Reduction of vibrations;
  • Noise reduction and consequently quieter operation, benefiting the operator;

Bolt-on rubber pads

They are installed on steel shoes bolted to the machine’s iron track. They are fixed by tightening a nut on threaded pins located on the back of the pads.

Their width is identical to that of the steel shoe, which allows the machine to remain within its dimensions and maintain its maximum width, avoiding problems during transport and use in tight spaces limited by walls and curbs

This is the most common type and is recommended for long-term work, despite being more complex and slower to assemble and replace compared to the CLIP-ON type.

Clip-on rubber pads Clip-on rubber pads

They are installed on steel shoes without external holes for BOLT-ON pad application. Application is via lateral clips, one fixed and one “mobile” with two fixing screws.This significantly reduces application and assembly time.

It is advantageous for short-term use due to the speed of assembly and disassembly.

ROAD-LINER/GEOGRIP rubber track shoes

GEOGRIP or ROAD Liner track shoes are formed by a metal steel part coated with a layer of rubber integrated through a fusion process.

They completely replace the steel shoe, as they are directly positioned on the chain via the four fixing screws, thus replacing the steel shoe.

They are ideal when the priority is protecting the surface of use and when a machine must operate on roads and company yards. However, they are not recommended if the machine must operate on abrasive surfaces with rubble and debris.

Sampierana U/C Spare Parts rubber tracks: strength and quality

In our warehouse located in Modena, we have a large supply of spare parts, including rubber tracks, critical components for construction equipment.

Three keywords: steel cables, metal core, compound.

Thanks to 30 years of experience in the field and strong cooperation with our suppliers, we have developed a top-quality product with high-level performance on all types of applications.

Three are the strengths of our rubber tracks:

  • Steel cables;.
  • Metal inserts;.
  • Rubber compound.

Steel cables

The diameter of the inner cables has been increased: this ensures high strength and strong traction. The formula adopted in production ensures good bonding of the steel cable with the rubber.

Metal inserts

The quality of the metal inserts, made by forging, has been improved. In this way, we achieved greater product strength and, in addition, the risk of lateral deformation of the rubber track is prevented.

Rubber compound

We worked on a compound optimization process, ensuring an increased percentage of natural rubber compared to the synthetic component and ultra-thick carcass.

What are the differences between rubber and iron tracks?

Sampierana U/C Spare Parts offers within the spare parts catalog two types of tracks: rubber and iron.

The choice of a vehicle equipped with a rubber track depends on the type of work and the type of terrain on which the vehicle will have to work.

In most cases, on mini-excavators class 1-5 ton, in 70% of cases, the choice falls to the rubber product. As the weight class of the machine increases, this percentage tends to reverse and the steel carriage version is preferred.

The choice to prefer rubber track on mini-excavators also depends on other factors:

  • the rubber product offers greater traction and superior maneuverability than iron tracks;
  • Rubber-made tracks are quieter and more comfortable to use.

In any case, the reason that most affects the choice of a rubber or iron track is related to the surface and type of use.

Application of rubber tracks

What are the types of construction equipment on which they are applied?

  • Mini excavators;
  • Excavators;
  • Skid Loaders;
  • Loaders;
  • Cranes and working platforms;
  • Mobile platforms;
  • Farm tractors;
  • Combine harvesters.

Kevin’s story: Sampierana U/C Spare Parts discovering the Middle East

How did your journey at Sampierana U/C Spare Parts begin?

My journey began in December 2022 here in Modena. In fact, almost all my working life has been in the construction and earthmoving machinery sector. The one at Sampierana U/C Spare Parts is my first experience in the spare parts sector.

Kevin Ricambi Sampierana UC Spare Parts

When did your journey in this field begin?

I took a 3-year break from the industry. After university the first 12 years I worked for Caterpillar, and lived in different countries, in 2011 I moved to Milan, spent 5 years there. I met my Italian wife and then we moved to Dubai.

In 2016 we moved to Dubai and in 2018 our baby girl arrived. At that point, we decided to move closer to home. I left CAT and found another job in Milan in a different sector because I preferred, at that time in my life, to put the family first and I worked outside the sector for three years.

Although the motivation and interest to get involved in the industry again was there. Thanks to a meeting with a head hunter, I became aware of a job opportunity at Sampierana U/C Spare Parts to manage sales negotiations with the Middle East and Africa.

That part outside Europe I knew very well from my experience in Dubai and this advantage helped me.

What are the biggest difficulties between the world of excavators and spare parts?

They are two quite different worlds. For machines, customers generally like Komatsu, CAT, Case. They already know what they want. For parts, it’s different: there is a lot more competition. Value for money is essential and in many cases there is little reliability with the customer, because initially the customer immediately looks for the lowest price. Perhaps my difficulty, as a salesman, was precisely this: to realise that for machines the customer already knows what he wants. For spare parts, on the other hand, the approach is quite different.

For Sampierana U/C Spare Parts, is the Italian market easier to handle than the Middle East and Africa?

This is more about our brand. For us at Sampierana U/C Spare Parts it is easier to manage this market because we are physically present here. However, abroad remains important to us and a market that we continue to explore. My last trips were to South Africa, Morocco and I am already in contact with customers in the Middle East. Unfortunately, it is not so easy for us sales people, if in Italy you can visit several customers in several days, with longer distances it is different.

Did you immediately start working on the Middle East?

Ho studiato ingegneria spaziale in Inghilterra e subito dopo ho iniziato a lavorare nel team Sales&Marketing. Posso dire di aver cambiato completamente strada, ma non bisogna avere paura. Non si può pianificare ogni passo della vita.

The first focus was that, mainly Saudi Arabia. Then I started to expand the radius to South Africa last year and we discovered some interesting new potential customers.

No, absolutely. The whole export team is aligned to the dynamics of market expansion, so that was an advantage.

U/C Spare Parts

Were you glad to get back to the Middle East through your work at Sampierana U/C Spare Parts?

Yes, because meeting African and Middle Eastern cultures gives you a different perspective on travelling to new places and getting to know them better. Saudi Arabia has changed dramatically in recent years. In 2016 the process to get a visa was very expensive, today already there are many changes also related to women’s culture.

When I went last year there was a lot more openness and for our industry that means a lot.

How do you manage in your day-to-day work?

I make the most of the possibility to work from home. I must say that the hybrid mode has been an excellent opportunity to balance private life and work.

Did you concentrate on business studies at university?

I actually studied space engineering in England and immediately afterwards started working in the Sales&Marketing Team. I can say that I changed my path completely, but there is no need to be afraid. You can’t plan every step of life.

Mara srl: customer testimony Sampierana U/C Spare Parts

Mara srl (Macchine Attrezzature Ricambi e Assistenza), a historic Komatsu dealer, was established in 1975 and is still a leader in the earthmoving machinery sector in Liguria.

Six years ago the meeting between Omar, an employee of Mara srl, and Alberto, sales representative of the Sampierana U/C Spare Parts team, laid the foundations for a new partnership. We have collected the testimony of our customer in a short fifteen-minute interview to tell you how it all began and why our relationship continues.

How did you get to know Sampierana U/C Spare Parts? .

The first contact came with the meeting of one of your sales representatives, Alberto. We received his visit six years ago and since then our business relationship with U/C Spare Parts began. After the first request for supplies, the relationship with U/C Spare Parts was strengthened. Today our service contact, Andrea, and Alberto, the sales representative, are also ‘at home’ as they say.

M.A.R.A-Srl

How has your demand for spare parts evolved over the years?

For us the entire offer of undercarriage spare parts is fundamental, but certainly the flagship product to which we are most linked is the track.
Quality, when it comes to tracks for undercarriage spare parts, is fundamental and in U/C Spare Parts we have found an exceptional partner in this sense.

How would you define Sampierana U/C Spare Parts in an adjective? .

Operational.

What kept you tied to our brand?
The effectiveness of the service and the shipping times are the strengths that meet our needs. The relationship with the service representative is more than professional, we define it as “human” because Andrea is always available, ready to promptly resolve problems and satisfy our requests.
The service and the human component of U/ C Spare Parts are a non-obvious plus these days.

In the world of spare parts for more than ten years: Paolo’s voice

On a rainy day in April, after a few minutes’ delay, the door to the meeting room opens. Paolo, from the Sales Team of Sampierana U/C Spare Parts, has kept our appointment and joins us smiling to tell us about his experience in the world of spare parts.

How long have you been working in Sampierana?

I joined Sampierana on 20 November 2006, in November it will be eighteen years. I started in the warehouse and then moved to the Sales team at Sampierana U/C Spare Parts. And I’m still here!

How come this change?

In the spare parts department there used to be Mauro, my manager, and another colleague. After the resignation of this colleague, as was often the case at Sampierana, good internal figures were identified and they were offered a role advancement, especially if they showed competence in a given area.

Was the transition easy or did you have difficulties?

I think it is more correct to say that the transition was traumatic. Mauro, who supported me both before and after the role change, was often busy, since the spare parts team consisted of me and him, so only two people. At the beginning it was hard for me, there was a lot of work and several times I also found myself training alone, taking notes and carving out time even at home to get to know the products, the characteristics well.

It wasn’t an easy time, especially because at that time you often had to be ready for multiple tasks and often found yourself overworked. Then over time, today even more so, the situation has improved and everyone is more focused on their own role.

When the others from the Sampierana U/C Spare Parts team arrived, it was you who trained them, right?

Yes I was in charge of their training. If I think back to my early days, I remember the crises, the desire to give up and instead resist, to give confidence to the company as well, it gave me the opportunity to learn more and more and then to teach it to the rest of the team that arrived.

What do you value most about your work?

Helping the customer and being able to have a solution in hand for him or her. I specifically deal with the Italian market and the purchase of one spare part in particular, rubber tracks.

The U/C Spare Parts team is mostly based in Modena, but both you and other people are operational in San Piero. Has the physical distance with the rest of the team proved to be a problem in your day-to-day work?

No it was actually an opportunity to go to Modena often, to confront each other when needed.

Incontro Meeting Sampierana U/C Spare Parts

After sixteen years in Sampierana, a question is in order: what kept you here?

I really enjoy my job and I am very lucky because I get on well with those I work with. Since I arrived I have a great relationship with everyone even outside the office, we even challenge each other on the football pitch. So I can really consider myself lucky.

Doing this job I became patient, a quality that did not belong to me. Being in contact with customers, however, requires patience and I must admit that the job has made me grow a lot in this respect.
